The Bells

Five bells were first installed by Rudhall’s of Gloucester in 1717, a sixth bell being added some 30 years later.

Further bells were added in 1846 and 1886 by Taylors of Loughborough to make the current octave of 8 bells in the Key of F.

The Bellringers

Looking for a sociable hobby that’s a bit different? Join your local bell-ringers!

We number about 15 with an age range of 34-75! We are quite a mixed bunch with an ex-mayor, a retired lecturer, a sales manager, two farmers, a tax consultant and a pub landlord to name a few.

We meet to practice on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 7.45pm. On the 1st and 3rd Thursdays we go to Whittington to practice. The tower captain at Oswestry is Brian Rothera (01691 657778) and at Whittington is Mark Owen (01691 656766).

On Sundays we ring for morning service at 9.45am and for evensong at 5.45pm. We have an outing to visit other churches and ring their bells once or twice a year, and like to be involved in the many events that the Shropshire Association of Bell-ringers organise.

We always welcome visitors to the tower to find out about the bells, and for those interested we are always looking for new ringers to learn.

Ringing sample

These samples of ringing come from a peal of 5056 changes of Yorkshire Surprise Major, rung on Easter Sunday 2003 to celebrate the 60th birthday of one of our local ringers Phil Rothera.
